A quick heads-up on naming: Ledger now calls the app Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live). The rename was announced in October 2025, alongside the Ledger Nano Gen5. If you see either name on ledger.com, it is the same app.
The Short Version
Your Ledger device is a small, offline vault for your private keys. Ledger Live is the window you look through to manage what that vault controls. The app shows balances, prepares transactions and installs software on the device, but it cannot spend a single coin without you physically approving on the device.
Remember one rule above all others
Your 24-word recovery phrase is never typed into a computer, a phone, a website, a form, a chat or a “support” request. It is written on paper and kept offline.
Before You Install: Getting the Real App
Fake Ledger apps are one of the most common traps for new owners. They look identical to the real thing, but they ask for your recovery phrase and empty your wallet. Protect yourself before you download anything:
- Type ledger.com into your browser by hand. Do not click search ads, which scammers sometimes buy.
- Check the address bar. Watch for extra words, hyphens or other endings such as
ledger.io, which is not Ledger’s domain. - On mobile, open the App Store or Google Play and confirm the publisher is Ledger. On Android, the official package name is
com.ledger.live. - Ignore any “Ledger Live browser extension”. The desktop app is never distributed as an extension.
The app is free. If anyone asks you to pay for the download, you are on the wrong site.
Setting Up Ledger Live, One Step at a Time
Set aside some quiet time and keep the recovery sheet from the box next to you.
- Download from the official source Download the app from ledger.com for Windows, macOS or Linux, or install it from the official App Store or Google Play listing.
- Install the software On Windows, run the .exe file. On macOS, open the .dmg and drag the app into Applications. On Linux, make the AppImage executable; if your device is not detected over USB, you may need to add udev rules.
- Launch and initiate Launch the app and tap “Get started”.
- Select device model Choose your device: Nano S Plus, Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex or Stax.
- Choose configuration path New owners pick “set up a new device”. If you already have a recovery phrase, choose restore. If the device is already configured, choose connect.
- Define device PIN Create your PIN on the device. Pick something you will remember but others cannot guess.
- Copy 24 words strictly by hand The device shows each word; write them on the recovery sheet in order. Do not take a screenshot or photo, and do not save them in a notes app.
- Confirm words on physical hardware Verify the words on the device as prompted.
- Pass the Genuine Check Let Ledger Live run the Genuine check to confirm your device is authentic.
- Install required coin applications Open My Ledger and install coin apps for the networks you plan to use.
- Add initial crypto accounts Add your first accounts. Ledger Live will show them on the portfolio screen.
- Conduct small test transaction Practise with a small deposit. Use Receive, compare the address on the device screen with the one in the app, and only then send larger amounts.
Essential Backup Warning
If you make a mistake at step 7 or 8, stop and start the setup again rather than guessing. A wrong word means a backup that cannot restore your wallet.
Where to keep your recovery sheet
Once the 24 words are on paper, the sheet becomes the most valuable thing you own in crypto. A few beginner-friendly guidelines:
- Store it somewhere private and dry, away from the device itself.
- Do not keep a digital copy of any kind: no photo, scan, email draft or password manager entry.
- Do not show it to anyone who offers to “check” it for you, however helpful they seem.
- If you ever suspect someone has seen it, treat the wallet as compromised and move your funds to a newly set up wallet.
What Happens Behind the Scenes
It helps to understand why the setup works the way it does.
Where the keys live
Inside each Ledger device is a Secure Element, a chip built to keep secrets. Your private keys are created there and stay there. The app on your laptop or phone never receives them. This is why a hacked computer, on its own, cannot drain a properly used hardware wallet.
Your device is locked with a PIN. Advanced users can also add an optional passphrase. The 24 words are the master backup that can recreate everything on a new device.
What the app is for
Ledger Live is the interface. It talks to the internet, reads blockchain data, displays your balances and prepares transactions. It is powerful but not trusted with secrets.
How a payment gets approved
When you send crypto, the process looks like this:
- You fill in the address and amount in the app.
- The app passes the unsigned transaction to your device.
- Your device displays the details. Clear Signing presents them in readable language.
- You compare what you see with what you intended, then approve on the device.
- The device signs internally and hands back the signed transaction.
- The app sends it out to the network.
Hardware as Ground Truth
If anything on the device screen looks wrong, reject it. The device screen is the one you can trust.
Desktop or Phone? Choosing Your Version
You can use either version, or both with the same device. Here is how they compare:
| Aspect | Desktop app | Mobile app |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Windows, macOS, Linux | iPhone (iOS) and Android |
| Connects by | USB cable (no Bluetooth needed) | Bluetooth for Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax; USB-OTG cable on Android for Nano S Plus |
| Good for | First setup, firmware updates, reviewing many accounts | Quick balance checks, receiving, sending while away from your desk |
| Features | Portfolio, send/receive, buy/sell/swap via providers, staking, Discover, My Ledger | The same core set; some options or providers can differ by platform and region |
| Security | Device signs everything; install only from ledger.com | Device signs everything; install only from the official store listing |
What this means for a beginner: start on desktop if you can. A USB cable is the simplest connection, and every Ledger model supports it. Add the mobile app later for convenience. If you own a Nano S Plus and an iPhone, be aware the combination does not work on mobile, because the Nano S Plus has no Bluetooth and connects to phones only through USB-OTG on Android.
What You Can Do Once You Are Set Up
After setup, Ledger Live opens up quite a lot:
Portfolio Overview
See everything in one portfolio, across more than 15,000 tracked coins and tokens.
Send and Receive
Receive and send, always confirming addresses on the device.
Buy, Sell or Swap
Buy, sell or swap through third-party providers built into the app. They charge their own fees and may ask for identity verification.
Staking Yields
Stake some assets, such as ETH and SOL. Treat staking rewards as variable, never guaranteed.
Discover Ecosystem
Use dApps through Discover while keeping signing on your device.
Clear Signing
Read what you sign with Clear Signing and Transaction Check.
My Ledger App Hub
Keep the device current with firmware updates and new coin apps from My Ledger.
Ledger Recover (Optional)
Optionally subscribe to Ledger Recover, a paid backup service for your recovery phrase. It is entirely opt-in.
Scams New Owners Commonly Meet
Scammers target beginners because they assume you do not know the rules yet. Typical tricks include:
Phishing Web Apps
A website or app that looks like Ledger Live and asks you to “sync” or “restore” by entering your 24 words.
Phishing Communications
An email or even a printed letter claiming your wallet needs verification. Some of these followed Ledger’s 2020 customer data leak.
Impostor Staff
A friendly “Ledger support agent” who messages you first on Telegram or Discord.
Urgent Firmware Traps
A pop-up demanding an urgent firmware update that requires your recovery phrase.
The Absolute Shield
Every one of these ends the same way if you comply. Ledger never asks for your 24 words, and no genuine update ever needs them.
Safe Ledger Live Download
Always acquire the software directly from Ledger's genuine infrastructure. Never trust third-party mirrors, sponsored ads, or direct chat messages.
Go to Official Download at ledger.com This link opens the official Ledger domain. The Cold Vault Digest hosts no software files.Frequently asked questions
Are Ledger Live and Ledger Wallet the same thing?
Yes. Ledger renamed Ledger Live to Ledger Wallet in October 2025. The app’s role is unchanged, and many guides and users still use the older name.
Which Ledger devices work with the mobile app?
The Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax connect over Bluetooth on both iOS and Android. The Nano S Plus connects to Android phones with a USB-OTG cable.
Can I use a Nano S Plus with an iPhone?
Not through the mobile app. The Nano S Plus has no Bluetooth, and the mobile app’s USB-OTG connection is available on Android only. Use the desktop app instead.
Will Ledger support ever ask for my 24 words?
Never. Anyone asking for your recovery phrase, whether by email, letter, phone or chat, is attempting to steal your funds.
Does Ledger itself sell me crypto when I use Buy or Swap?
These services are provided by third-party partners integrated into the app. Each one sets its own fees and terms and may require identity checks.
Can I run Ledger Live on Linux?
Yes. Ledger provides an AppImage for Linux. Make it executable, and add udev rules if your device is not recognized over USB.
Is staking in Ledger Live a guaranteed income?
No. Staking rewards depend on the network and are not guaranteed. Read the terms shown in the app for each asset before you start.
